Years before George W. Bush entered the White House, and years before the Sept. 11 attacks set the direction of his presidency, a group of influential neo-conservatives hatched a plan to get Saddam Hussein out of power.
   


Neocon Facts:

  • Neocons began discussing war with Iraq and weapons of mass destruction at least as early as 1992.

  • Neocons proposed "regime change" in Iraq in 1999.

  • Neocons (Wohlstetter and Perle) brought us Ahmed Chalabi, a convicted embezzler, as a part of their efforts to oust Hussein.

  • Neocons argued that few troops would be needed (Perle, 40--80,000. Wolfowitz claimed 200,000 post-war troops was "wildly off the mark.").

The Neocon Players:  
 

  • Rumsfeld, only a semi-neocon, is a signer of the leading neocon organization's, the Project for a New American Century, statement of principles.

  • Wolfowitz, Deputy Secretary of Defense, took view that "we're going to fight this war and we're going to install Chalabi."

  • Irving Kristol, Podhoretz, Perle, Feith, Libby, Bolton, Abrams, Kagan, Ledeen, William Kristol, Gafney.

Neocon Ideals:  
 

  • Challenge regimes hostile to American interests.

  • Unilateralism and the use of preemptive military action, if necessary.

  • Increase defense spending.

  • Promote democratic ideals abroad.
