The Bush administration says it will carry its "war against
terrorism" to many lands. By December 2001, after initial military successes in
Afghanistan, Pentagon planners turned their attention to other targets,
including Somalia, Sudan and Iraq. Washington also began deploying troops in
many countries to carry out special operations against alleged terrorists. In
early 2002, the administration announced that it considered Iraq, Iran and North
Korea as part of an “Axis of Evil.” Despite vocal opposition from all around the
world, the US and Great Britain invaded Iraq on March 20, 2003. Before long,
political analysts, journalists and others began speculating about who would be
the next target for US regime change: Iran, Syria or North Korea?
